The Colossi this time around are even bigger for the detail on their armor and fur, and even stranger in their loneliness for the way they move at a higher framerate. It has that rare quality of both bringing the present in line with rose-colored memories and somehow making those memories even sharper. The environments are just as sparse, the monsters just as mysterious, the game just as straightforward and yet simple and obtuse. It's a ground-up remake that miraculously recreates the game in painstaking detail, and the remake succeeds to the degree that developers Bluepoint manage to completely disappear into an image of creator Fumito Ueda's original. This game isn't a remaster, which is mostly what you see when older games are brought to new consoles. Shadow of the Colossus is not the only game that makes you wonder whether your prey deserves death, but it's the only one that does it with quite this grace. Those eyes were captivating even when they were just tiny points of light on the PS2, and they still manage all of their mystery today: strange, small, sad and threatening. Every Colossus has these tiny eyes stuck into its head - blue when it's on its own, red when it enters combat. It was a slow experience punctuated by the danger of a new Colossus, the stress of poking at it until you found a weakness that would allow you to board it, the triumph of knowing you had taken its defenses apart and finally the lonely sadness at watching it disintegrate before your eyes. It's tempting to call it revolutionary, but that doesn't feel quite accurate: it never triggered a revolution simply because no games had the audacity to try something similar. You're armed with a sword but slashing at their legs Monster Hunter-style doesn't do anything to bring them down - instead you have to climb their furry bodies and stab in them in glowing weak spots, turning every encounter into a combat puzzle about how best to mount the beast.

They're built on a scale that nobody had ever really seen at the time and that strained the PS2 to a breaking point. You travel long distances across remarkably barren territory to find them moving through their homes: they don't invite conflict, but you kill them anyway. You play a wanderer tasked with killing sixteen massive Colossi so that a demon will resurrect your lover, and those sixteen Colossi are the only enemies in the game. A bit of background: Shadow of the Colossus came out in 2006 as a sort of art house AAA title, something with a relative budget that would strain today's small studios but a design that would mystify today's big studios.
